Why Odds Matter
Odds tell you two things: how much you stand to win, and how likely the bookmaker thinks an outcome is. Learning to read them is the single most useful skill in betting.
Decimal Odds
Decimal odds show your total return per unit staked, including your stake. Odds of 2.50 return $2.50 for every $1 staked — $1.50 profit plus your $1 back.
- Simple formula: Return = Stake × Odds
- Most common format in Europe, Canada and Australia.
Fractional Odds
Fractional odds show profit relative to stake. 5/2 means you win $5 profit for every $2 staked.
American Odds
American odds use a plus or minus sign. −150 means you must stake $150 to win $100. +200 means a $100 stake wins $200 profit.
Implied Probability
Divide 1 by the decimal odds to get the implied chance. Odds of 4.00 imply a 25% chance of winning.
Comparing Odds Across Bookmakers
Small differences compound over a season. Holding accounts at two or three bookmakers and always taking the best price is the easiest edge available to any bettor.
